Sell Out

I wrote this back in 2009 when I was in undergrad.

Sell Out

People now say they’ve got rhymes
They’ve got rhymes and punch lines
But what are a few punch lines in the end?
What kind of message are you trying to send?
What’s up with you bending over backward?
Destroying who you are to meet someone’s standard

They say do your part to make a change
I’m doing my thing, but why does it matter
It’s not like anyone will follow anyway
So then why should I even bother?
You’ll never see what you’re doing and realize
Never come to your senses and rationalize

Why start a fight where one isn’t needed,
Do you need that much attention?
Are you really that conceited?
There’s got to be another option-

The more you have, the more you throw it away
Is this where we’ve worked so hard to get today
We’ve done so much to make your status
And this is all that you’ve got to show us

What would they think of you now?
What would they say if they could see you?
It’s sad, cause now you’re so low
I look in your direction and I see right through

Now prepare yourselves for the marathon that never ends
So just ditch all the posers and find yourself some real friends
You’ll start to see, your actions had an impact way back when
And your music will change someone, just like it changed you then

What ever happened to music with meaning?
Something to make our hearts skip a beat
All this noise that’s blasting is so demeaning
Now real music’s become obsolete
Don’t say I don’t know what I’m talking about
You're the one who completely sold out
